Linux in-flight

Posted in

While flying China Airlines last November from Los Angeles to Taipei, I managed to crash the interactive in-flight entertainment system at my seat about 10 minutes into the flight. It was a nice system with a handheld controller where you could play games, select a movie, listen to music and watch TV. The stewardess hit the reset button for my seat and a second later I caught a flash of a penguin.
Not just any penguin, It was Tux staring back at me for a second while a bunch of familiar text scrolled past and the linux based entertainment center booted up in front of me. I doubt that more than 5 people on the flight would have recognized Tux staring at them.
This was actually a nice little entertainment system. Handheld control coming from the armrest of my seat controlling the monitor installed in the seat in front. The system included on-demand games, movies, music and television. The controls worked well with only a minor delay and included basic PVR functionality. When there was a onboard announcement, all of the systems were paused. My crash was a result of an onboard announcement while trying to play one of the poker games.
When I had some downtime in Taiwan, I tried to look on line for more information, but never found any.
I had forgotten about the incident until a few hours ago when I boarded an EVA Air flight for LA to Taipei. Their entertainment system is sorely lacking with only channel up/down and volume up/down. I couldn't find any easy way to crash it so I gave up and read a book.
